Neurology
The Neurology Department at CMC stands as a leading center dedicated to exceptional clinical care, impactful community outreach, and cutting-edge clinical research. The Department of Neurology was started in July 1988 under the leadership of Dr Alexander P Abraham.
History
The Neurology Department at CMC stands as a leading center dedicated to exceptional clinical care, impactful community outreach, and cutting-edge clinical research. The Department of Neurology was started in July 1988 under the leadership of Dr Alexander P Abraham. Later Dr Yashpal Singh, Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian and Dr Mahesh Kate contributed to the growth of the department.
Facilities
The department has state-of-the-art Neurophysiology laboratory Video EEG, Digital EEG, NCS/EMG machines, and Sleep lab. The department has the only state of the art Autonomic Lab in North India with facilities to carry out comprehensive cardiovascular autonomic testing, sudomotor (Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Refles Test and Thermoregulatory test. The department possesses a Non-invasive Brain stimulation lab, transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation. The Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) lab provides services like mechanical thrombectomy for stroke patients, carotid artery stenting, coiling for subarachnoid hemorrhage and other neurointerventional procedures.
Neurorehabilitation team is led by Prof Dorcas Gandhi, who is also the Vice Principal, College of Physiotherapy. She is currently enrolled in the Future Leaders Program of WSO. She is ably supported by a dedicated team of physiotherapists. The rehabilitation center has low-cost robotic rehabilitation and immersive virtual rehabilitation facilities.
Research
There are about 25 research staff who are working in various stroke projects funded by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). In the past the department has received funding from India Alliance (Wellcome Trust/DBT, India), World Federation of Neurology, National Institute of Health, USA, Population Health Research Institute, Hamilton, Canada, NHMRC, Australia and NIHR, UK.
The department has been recognized by ICMR as the Collaborating Center of Excellence stroke research (ICMR CCOE) in the year 2023. This is the only department in the country to be recognized by ICMR for contributions to stroke research.
Prof Pandian is the Principal Investigator of the Indian Stroke Clinical Network (INSTRuCT) which is a network of 51 stroke centers in the country. This network is supported by ICMR and currently there are 4 ongoing stroke trials, and two trials have been completed.
Advanced stroke center
This is the first stroke program in the country to be certified by WSO and NABH in the country as the Advanced stroke center.
Global Contribution
The stroke program has been recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) as the Collaborative Center for stroke. This is the first center in the world to be designated as WHO CC for stroke. The WHO CC CMC Ludhiana has been working in the South-east Asia region (SEARO) countries like Bhutan, Myanmar, Maldives, Timor Leste, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, is the Professor and Acting Head of Neurology., and is also the Principal of Christian Medical College. He is the current President of World Stroke Organization (WSO), the first Asian to hold this post.

Dr Rajeshwar Sahonta
Dr Rajeshwar Sahonta is an Associate Professor of Neurology and a Neurointerventionalist. Dr Sahonta completed his Future Leaders training program of WSO.

Dr Ivy Anne Sebastian
Dr Ivy Anne Sebastian is an Associate Professor of Neurology, she completed her Stroke Fellowship from the renowned Calgary Stroke Program, in Canada. She is also the board of directors’ member of WSO and belongs to the first cohort of Future Leaders trained by WSO.

About Us
The DM Neurology program at CMC Ludhiana was established in 2012, under the leadership of Dr. Jeyaraj Pandian (Professor and Head of the Department), with significant contributions from Dr. Yashpal Singh (Professor of Neurology), under the able guidance of Dr S.M Bhatti the then principal of CMC, Ludhiana. Dr. Alex Abraham, the founder of the Neurology Department at CMC Ludhiana, along with Dr. Mahesh Kate (Stroke Neurologist, Edmonton, Canada, 2015–2019), Dr. Anirudh Kulkarni (Neurointerventionist, 2018–2019), and Dr. Vivek Agarwal (Neurointerventionist, 2019–2022), have all been key faculty members who contributed significantly to the growth and development of the department from its inception. Their combined expertise in clinical neurology, stroke care, and neurointervention have helped establish a robust foundation for the department’s clinical services, research, and training programs.

DM Neurology Training Program
The DM Neurology program at CMC Ludhiana was established in 2012, under the leadership of Dr. Jeyaraj Pandian (Professor and Head of the Department), with significant contributions from Dr. Yashpal Singh (Professor of Neurology), under the able guidance of Dr S.M Bhatti the then principal of CMC, Ludhiana. Dr. Alex Abraham, the founder of the Neurology Department at CMC Ludhiana, along with Dr. Mahesh Kate (Stroke Neurologist, Edmonton, Canada, 2015–2019), Dr. Anirudh Kulkarni (Neurointerventionist, 2018–2019), and Dr. Vivek Agarwal (Neurointerventionist, 2019–2022), have all been key faculty members who contributed significantly to the growth and development of the department from its inception. Their combined expertise in clinical neurology, stroke care, and neurointervention have helped establish a robust foundation for the department’s clinical services, research, and training programs.

There are about 25 research staff who are working in various stroke projects funded by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). In the past the department has received funding from India Alliance (Wellcome Trust/DBT, India), World Federation of Neurology, National Institute of Health, USA, Population Health Research Institute, Hamilton, Canada, NHMRC, Australia and NIHR, UK.
The department has been recognized by ICMR as the Collaborating Center of Excellence stroke research (ICMR CCOE) in the year 2023. This is the only department in the country to be recognized by ICMR for contributions to stroke research.
Prof Pandian is the Principal Investigator of the Indian Stroke Clinical Network (INSTRuCT) which is a network of 51 stroke centers in the country. This network is supported by ICMR and currently there are 4 ongoing stroke trials, and two trials have been completed.

History
The Neurology Department at CMC stands as a leading center dedicated to exceptional clinical care, impactful community outreach, and cutting-edge clinical research. The Department of Neurology was started in July 1988 under the leadership of Dr Alexander P Abraham. Later Dr Yashpal Singh, Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian and Dr Mahesh Kate contributed to the growth of the department.

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian
Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, is the Professor and Acting Head of Neurology., and is also the Principal of Christian Medical College. He is the current President of World Stroke Organization (WSO), the first Asian to hold this post.

Dr Vineeth Jaison
Dr Vineeth Jaison is Professor of Neurology and he heads the Neuromuscular Center of Excellence.

Dr Rajeshwar Sahonta
Dr Rajeshwar Sahonta is an Associate Professor of Neurology and a Neurointerventionalist. Dr Sahonta completed his Future Leaders training program of WSO.

Dr Ivy Anne Sebastian
Dr Ivy Anne Sebastian is an Associate Professor of Neurology, she completed her Stroke Fellowship from the renowned Calgary Stroke Program, in Canada. She is also the board of directors’ member of WSO and belongs to the first cohort of Future Leaders trained by WSO.
